Clear, concise, and a must for a small business owner April 17, 2010 Irene Watson (Austin, Texas) Small book, big impact.
I received this book for review the day of the infamous "Tax Day." How appropriate. Even though I do work with an accountant and use Quickbooks, I still found some of areas referred to in the book that I'm not clear on and need to discuss with him. I also got a deeper understanding of some of the areas such as "Selecting the Best Business Structure." When I first started my business I qualified as a sole proprietor and remained as such. After reading Hanely's chapter on this aspect I certainly do have more questions for my own accountant to see if I should remain in that classification or if there are advantages of becoming an LLC or a corporation. As well, the glossary of terms is extremely helpful.
The best part of Hanley's " Minutes with...A Certified Public Accountant: Effective Tax Planning for the MicroBusiness" is it is extremely concise. What others say in two or three chapter he says in one or two paragraphs. It's not about how many pages the book has, it's about giving clear, concise information, and that's exactly what Hanley does. I truly believe this book would be extremely helpful for anyone starting a small business, or in one. It would positively urge the reader to look at aspects in their own business and discuss them with their accountants.
Got 30 Minutes - Get an Education July 17, 2009 Frank F. Fiore (Phoenix, AZ USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
OK. I admit it. I'm a sucker for any book that say 10 easy steps to this or 15 ways to do that or create this in no time - or 30 minutes to tighter abs. I mean, who has time today to sit down and read some tome on whatever.
So I hade to read Michael Hanley's book '30 Minutes with a Certified Public Accountant - Effective Tax Planning for the Micro-business' and I wasn't disappointed. I've had several small businesses and have written a number of books on e-commerce. I know the value of getting up to speed on a subject in as little time as possible and this book fulfills that promise.
First, Hanley defines what a micro-business is - any business with $1 million dollars in annual sales or annual revenue. But, many of the concepts in his book are applicable to small businesses with revenue up to $10 million.
Hanley writes that most of information covered in the book was written about before but the goal of the 30 minute book is to boil down existing information into key concepts that can be easily digested and, more importantly, applied to your business. The key to his book on effective tax planning for a micro-business, useful for from CEO's to mothers, is to increase the absorption rate of the reader and insure that the information that is retained is the most useful and essential.
In other words, if you only have 30 minutes to learn about a concept, then his book lays out the most important topics you need to know about tax planning in 30 minutes.
That kind of approach is much needed in today's world of instant - `I want it now!"
For example, take the chapter on `Selecting the Best Business Structure'. Something like that could fill an entire book. But in sixteen short pages, Hanley outlines the different types of business structures, and there are several, and their tax consequences to you. He does the same for effective tax planning, the right way to lend money to your business, how to battle the AMT, using buy-sell agreements to save taxes, and how to sell your business tax-free. He even saves you time by supplying a list of accounting terms so you don't have to rummage through Google looking up definitions while you read.
That and more is a lot to learn in 30 minutes but Hanley pulls it off.
I highly recommend this book.

Michael T. Hanley's 30 Minutes With... A Certified Public Accountant: Effective Tax Planning for the Microbusiness is structured to follow the US Internal Revenue Code. And although the guidebook is written for businesses with annual sales or annual revenue of less than one million dollars (micro-businesses), many of the concepts and principles can easily be applicable to enterprises with annual sales as high as ten million dollars. (According to a recent US census there are approximately twenty-seven million of these micro-businesses representing about ninety-nine percent of all businesses in the USA).
Hanley is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor with extensive knowledge in the area of small business tax planning. His guidebook illustrates that if you are determined and methodical about business tax planning, you can actually make and save money. This can easily be effectuated by taking advantage of the prevailing laws that have been earmarked for claiming tax benefits. In other words, your tax liability is reduced, and as we all agree, if you can save on taxes, why not do so.
The first thing that readers are likely to notice about this paperback is its compactness, however this in no way takes away its usefulness, as it does cover a great deal of turf. Hanley, with an eye to economy, effectively boils down to its bare essentials existing tax information that will not drown the reader in mundane and sometimes esoteric detail. Small business owners are thus assured that they will not encounter information overload and they easily will be able to retain the most useful and essential information about a particular topic.
After reading this practical easy-to-read guide, the business-person is without doubt in a better position to understand and discuss intelligently with his or her CPA a variety of subjects that are covered and examined in the guidebook. These include sound and basic advice pertaining to selecting the best business structure, the most tax efficient way of lending money to your business, rules pertaining to accelerated depreciation, why keeping jobs within the USA saves taxes, leasing of appreciating assets to your business, the Alternative Minimum Tax, qualifying on-premises employee meals, tax free education, buy-sell agreements, and selling your business tax- free.
As tax laws are often modified or repealed it is essential that small business owners keep up-to-date. Consequently, owners of the book are entitled to receive free annual updates and all they have to do to take advantage of these updates is to complete the subscription form at the back of the book. These updates can be sent by regular mail, fax or email.
Although reading this book will not instantaneously make you a small business-tax expert, nonetheless, you definitely will be in a better position to appreciate how important it is to have proper business tax planning. It should be pointed out that the book does not replace a qualified CPA and one should be consulted in order to reap maximum advantages.

Spend your time wisely July 8, 2009 Quorum 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think anyone looking for a cost-effective way of using 30 minutes and $22 in order to gain useful tools that can be used again and again once learned is looking in the right place here. Read it a few times if you have to, but get that invaluable knowledge to sink in. Concise and to the point, without being too technically written, I recommend it to the everyman or woman that needs the most tax advice for the least money.
