Amazon.com Review
How can you join the ranks of America's wealthy (defined as people whose net worth is over one million dollars)? It's easy, say doctors Stanley and Danko, who have spent the last 20 years interviewing members of this elite club: you just have to follow seven simple rules. The first rule is, always live well below your means. The last rule is, choose your occupation wisely. You'll have to buy the book to find out the other five. It's only fair. The authors' conclusions are commonsensical. But, as they point out, their prescription often flies in the face of what we think wealthy people should do. There are no pop stars or athletes in this book, but plenty of wall-board manufacturers--particularly ones who take cheap, infrequent vacations! Stanley and Danko mercilessly show how wealth takes sacrifice, discipline, and hard work, qualities that are positively discouraged by our high-consumption society. "You aren't what you drive," admonish the authors. Somewhere, Benjamin Franklin is smiling.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful Information   July 9, 2010

This book is must read for those who want to be a millionaire. I am 21 years old in college. I know this is a book generally for people who are over 30. But seriously if you're looking to read books to expand your financial literacy and get a better understanding how millionaires become millionaires. This is it. In the beginning it gets really slow because of all the research data they did.. But in the middle of the book, i laughed out loud reading this because this book was saying true stuff and i learned some of the important things of what it takes to become a millionaire.. Not only it talks about money.. It talks about the discipline, desire and what it takes to become a millionaire.. I give it a 4.

I picked up my copy from a yard sale. The previous owners didn't get around to reading it, I think. I liked it so well I bought copies for my kids from Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars A handbook for amassing wealth   June 27, 2010

This book provides a look at America's millionaires that challenges common assumptions about what it looks like to be wealthy. The authors seem to be well-suited for this task, having performed many years of research on marketing to the affluent, and providing consulting services on this subject to 7 of the top 10 financial services company.

The ubiquitous theme of the book is frugality - Pay Yourself First, in the words of the book "The Richest Man in Babylon." If you always spend the money you make, you will never become wealthy, no matter how high your income!

A few surprises:
- 80% of millionaires in America (as of the mid-90's) are first-generation millionaires - not children of affluent families.
- Millionaires are nearly always frugal, but are not nearly as price-sensitive when it comes to medical services, legal and tax advice, and their children's education.
- The typical millionaire's car is only 20% more expensive than the average American's car!

The first half of the book is most broadly useful, giving a picture of typical millionaires, and explaining their lifestyle and mentality. In the second half of the book, the authors focus on the cars and children of the wealthy.

The book can get a little preachy. By the end you may feel that if you ever own an expensive automobile, whether or not you can afford it, you aren't doing it right. I would rather the authors recognized that everyone's priorities are different; some would rather spend on possessions and adventures to enjoy than aim for 10 million in net worth.

On the whole, a worthwhile and decently fast read.

I had a hard copy of this book before. However this book I purchased is so hard to read. The ink is too light and the quality of the material seems that I got what I paid for. I may have to get another copy. Can I return this for a better copy?

I was not impressed with this book. It didn't tell me anything that I did not already know and some of the things written I just flat out disagreed with. I would recommend Robert Kiyosaki's books instead.
